With the popularity of Mahjong skyrocketing in the recent years, there are a number of variations of the game that are being offered to players. One of the most famous of these is the Mahjong Solitaire game. This game is nothing like the regular version of the game, however the same kinds of tiles are used. The game of Mahjong Solitaire can provide hours of fun to player and is available as an online version, both for free and for real money. This article outlines the basic features of the game of Mahjong Solitaire.
Game Play and Objective of Mahjong Solitaire
Basically Mahjong Solitaire is a single player version of the classic Mahjong game, which typically involves four or more players. The goal of the game is very simple. The player is given 144 tiles on the board, which must be removed by pairing tiles. These 144 tiles are arranged in four separate layers and they all face upwards. If the tile can be moved to the right or the left without disturbing the arrangement, then the tile is said to be free. Players can only remove pairs of open tiles.
Once the player has removed a pair of free tiles, the layer beneath the tiles is exposed. The game is said to be completed when every pair has been removed. In this case the player wins the game. In case the player does not manage to remove all the pairs and there are no pairs exposed, the player loses the game. There are some versions of the online Mahjong Solitaire game which allow players to shuffle the tiles when there are no exposed pairs on the board. In case shuffling is allowed, it is always possible to win the game.
Rules of the Game
The one major rule of Mahjong Solitaire is that players can only remove a single pair of tiles at one time. Since there are 72 pairs in the game, this can prove to be a bit tricky. Only when a pair has been removed will the player be allowed to see the layer beneath.
There are six suits in total, unlike in the regular game of Mahjong. The suits in Mahjong Solitaire are Circles, Bamboo, Characters, Wind and Dragon like in the original game. The additional two suits are the Seasons suit and the Flowers Suit. Like in the main game, the Bamboo, Character and the Circle Suits all have tiles with rankings from one to nine. There are a total of three dragon tiles and four wind tiles. The seasons and the flower tiles both have four each. All the tiles (except the seasons and the flowers) have four tiles in each suit and rank. There are four tiles of each kind in both sets of honor tiles. In case of the remaining two suits however, there is only one tile of each kind.
In order to match tiles, players must match them exactly, with the same suit and same ranking. The only exceptions to this rule are the seasons and the flower suits, since they have only one tile of each kind.
There are a tremendous amount of variations when it comes to Mahjong Solitaire but they all abide by the same rules. We have added a substantial amount for you to try out, just visit our list of free mahjong solitaire games
