A new contender in the Online Mahjong space, eMahjong presents itself as one of the best sites to play Mahjong against others. The downloaded software, in contrast to the website that it is taken from, is sleek and pleasing on the eye. The traditional Eastern music playing in the background, the greens and bamboo décor on the software itself succeeds in making the player feel as though he has been plucked from his living room and transported to a luxury Chinese gambling den.

Game Variety

Opportunities are offered to play games for money or to play for practise and the money games vary between various types specific to Mahjong, such as International, classic and Riichi. All games can be practised at the practise table and with a little exploration of the site a nicely made tutorial can be found. This tells the new player that Mahjong is essentially a Far Eastern version of Rummy kub.

There are tournaments online as well as individual games with up to four players. There are a couple of problems with this site, the screen resolution if fixed for a bigger screen than the one my poor netbook has so I was restricted to seeing only about two thirds of what was on offer. Most people will be playing from their larger laptops or home desktop computers so that won’t be an issue, but still no self respecting gambling website should allow such a minor detail to cause problems to potential customers. The other issue and one that is as surprising as it is amateurish is that there is not a sign of a bonus in sight. There are simply no bonuses or freebies on offer anywhere to be seen on screen.

Summary

Despite these problems the game itself is remarkably addictive and fun to play, it takes a little time to figure out just how the game works but once you are into it, it is difficult to stop playing. Once the teething troubles of the site have been worked out emahjong could turn out to be an excellent site.

The Mahjong Express provides a gateway to the wonderful world of online Mahjong. Software

Moving to the download page to install the new software there seem to be still a few technical glitches with the download links. Although there are separate downloads for Apple Mac and PC the PC link seemed to have some trouble. Whenever the cursor hovered over the link the hand disappeared before it could be hit, which is a shame because with the aesthetically pleasing finish of the site itself and the one hundred and twenty per cent bonus offered to new players Mahjong Express had been doing well. After fiddling around with it for a few minutes the download process began.

Before being able to take a look around the software it is first necessary to register which is, perhaps an unnecessary obstacle to those merely interested in looking around the software, having said that it is unlikely that someone is going to go to the effort of downloading it only to not want to put money in and start playing so it is a minor concern.

The software, irritatingly, only works on a certain screen resolution which is too big for my small netbook screen which is a pain. Havign said that the software is nicely laid out and the game itself is finally explained to the casual arrival who is not familiar with it. The best way to explain what Mahjong is would be to compare it Rummikub the game of tiles and chops and changes. Each player starts off with a number of tiles to play with and keeps picking up a new one and discarding one until he is able to lay down a set. The first player to be rid of all of his pieces declares “Mahjong” and is the winner.

Summary

The game can be played between four people or in a tournament and there is definitely some money to be made here. The site does not lack players and it doesn’t take very long to get a game together which is definitely a bonus and it is certainly refreshing to find an interesting game that one can play online for money that is not called poker!
